The Healing Power of the Ocean

November 8, 2016 7:07 pm

I’m writing this after a few days away in the Canary Islands. It has been such a healing experience and one that has been so welcome after the last few months. It has been so lovely to be well enough to enjoy a few days away, soaking up the beautiful warm sunshine and feeling my body and soul breathe a sigh of relief.

Something thing I have especially enjoyed this week is swimming in the sea. I’ve been reminded just how healing it is.  I’ve always loved the ocean and it’s sparklyness, how it sounds, I love the distinctive smell of the salty sea air, and I especially love swimming in it. Feeling the cool water against my skin as I float around is one of the most healing things in the world.

Why Is the Sea So Good for Us?

It wasn’t until recently that I realised there is a reason why so many of us love being by the beach and swimming in the ocean. Sea air is full of healthy negative hydrogen ions (charged particles that are found abundantly in sea spray) which improve our ability to absorb oxygen as they neutralise damaging free radicals.

In a world where we are surrounded by technology such as mobile phones, TV’s and wifi, all of which produce positive ions which are not so good for us, the fresh sea air and all the goodness found within it, helps our body to cleanse and rebalance.

Sea water itself contains many minerals needed by your body to help it heal and detoxify, so immersing your body in it can be very healing on a physical level. Sea water is also abundant in Natural Salts and Magnesium, both of which are essential for energy production in our bodies and maintaining a healthy nervous system, so by having a swim in the sea you absorb these healing goodies through your skin.

Bearing all of this in mind, it’s easy to see why so many of us find a day at the beach or even a walk along a coastal path so healing. The Sea air and Sea water, along with the grounding effect of having your bare feet on the sand, the sunshine on your skin (vitamin D) and listening to the rhythmic sounds of the waves lapping against the shore line, all help our body to relax, rebalance and heal.

How to Bring the Healing Power of the Ocean into your Everyday Life

If like me, you are someone who doesn’t live by the sea, there are still ways you can incorporate some of it’s healing properties into your daily life.

One of these is to regularly bathe in a salt bath. You can do this at home in a normal bathtub. Just add a large handful of Epsom Bath Salts or Dead Sea Salt to a bath filled with warm water (you can buy this online or at most health food stores and chemists) and soak in it for half an hour.

Salt Baths help you detox by drawing out toxins, but also rejuvenate you by supplying your body with a whole host of minerals absorbed via the skin. The Magnesium content in Sea Salts makes this little healing ritual a great thing to do before bed, especially if you have trouble sleeping, as magnesium is renowned for its relaxing properties.

A Himalayan Salt Lamp is another way of getting a similar benefit from being near the Sea. Made from natural Himalayan Rock Salt, as the lamp heats up, negative ions are released into the air (similar to the negative ions found by the ocean.) This is a great way to counter balance some of the Positive Ions that come from the technology and electrical items we have in our homes and a bonus is that Himalayan Salt lamps also looks very pretty.

For many of us, a daily swim in the ocean this isn’t possible so things I’ve suggested here are great little substitutes, although of course nothing beats the real thing. I hope these little tips help you to bring some of the oceans healing into your home and your daily life, and that some of you can get to the actual sea itself sometime soon.

I’m so grateful for the few days I’ve spent in the sunshine on the beach this week, especially with the chilly English Winter Season ahead.

With Love

Beautiful post darling. It may be freezing right now but I love living by the sea and my sea walks are so therapeutic – when it’s not blowing a gale 😉
So glad you had a lovely holiday and topped up your vitamin D for winter . Xxx

I think you were born to live by the sea Carly. Can’t ever imagine you anywhere else. Cant wait till I can come to your beach and either sit in the sun with you (if its summer) or wrap up with you and have a flask of tea (if its winter). The beach is always lovely whatever season 🙂 xxx
